Tutoring for Resettling Youth
Since 2016, ROC organizes tutoring programs for resettled youth in Southwest Michigan.
All ROC associated tutors attend proper training sessions, regular reflections, & are monitored by trained educators
ROC takes action to these commonly faced issues by implementing an after school program in partnership with Kalamazoo Public Schools and Kalamazoo College Center for Civic Engagement.
The tutoring programs provide individualized homework help, student connection opportunities, and engagement activities & games.
Youths experience many challenges emotionally, mentally, and physically during forced displacement and resettlement in a new country. One of the results is falling behind on education.
Some of these challenges include:
- Learning a new culture
- Adapting to a new school system
- Compensating for educational gaps
- Learning a second language
